AI Moderator FAQ for Research Teams
This AI moderator FAQ answers the questions teams ask before they run their first study: who the participants are, how the moderator follows up, what an interview costs and what happens to your data. You invite your own customers with a link, the AI moderator runs each conversation, and you read findings with quotes. The answers below are short and specific.
Do people talk honestly to an AI moderator?
Many people answer an AI moderator openly because there is no interviewer to impress and no one waiting on the other end of a call. Participants answer in their own time and can take a moment to think. The moderator asks neutral follow-up questions, which keeps the answers in the participant's own words.
Where do participants come from?
You invite your own customers with a link. Moderators does not run a respondent panel and does not recruit participants. Send the link by email, in your product or in a message, and each person talks to the AI moderator on their own.
Voice or chat?
Both are available in the paid plans. Chat interviews suit short studies and people who prefer to type, and voice minutes suit longer stories told out loud. Each plan includes a monthly limit of chat interviews and voice minutes, and you choose the format for each study. The demo on the home page is text only.
How does the moderator decide what to ask next?
The moderator works from your research guide, which lists your goals, questions and follow-ups. During the conversation it reads each answer and decides whether to dig deeper, ask for an example or move on. It does not read from a fixed list of follow-ups, so the next question depends on what the participant just said.
What does an interview cost compared to a human moderator?
On the Team plan, $249 divided by 400 chat interviews is about 62 cents per interview at the limit, and about 31 cents on annual billing at $124.50 a month. A human moderator is usually paid per project or per hour, so the cost depends on your arrangement. Compare it against your own last quote. Full plan details are on the ai moderator pricing page.
Is there a free version?
No. There are four paid plans, starting at $99 a month or $49.50 a month billed annually. You can try the interview on the home page without a card before you choose a plan.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. You can cancel at any time, and your plan stays active until the end of the period you have paid for. Payments are not refunded, and a limit used in a period does not return.
Is my data used to train models?
No. Your data stays yours. Your interviews, transcripts and findings are used to run your studies and are not used to train models. More detail is on the research data security page.
Can I keep my research guide and transcripts when I cancel?
Yes. Export your guide, transcripts and findings before the end of the period you have paid for, and keep them. Scale includes a findings repository, and Enterprise includes data retention controls if you need to set how long data is stored.
Can my team work in the same account?
Yes. Starter includes 1 seat, Team includes 5 seats, Scale includes 15 seats, and Enterprise adds roles and SSO. Seats are the people on your side who run studies and read findings.
How long does it take to get findings?
Findings are ready as interviews finish. You write what you want to learn, send one link, and read the themes with quotes as participants complete their conversations. There is no scheduling step in between.
Do I need to write the interview questions myself?
No. Describe what you want to learn and who you are talking to, and Moderators drafts the research guide with goals, questions and follow-ups. You can edit the guide before you share the link.
What do the findings look like?
Findings are grouped into themes, and each theme comes with quotes from the participants who said it. You can trace a theme back to the conversations behind it. The features page lists everything in a study.
Does it work for usability tests and concept tests?
Yes. The same AI moderator can run customer interviews, usability tests, concept tests, churn interviews, win-loss interviews and AI focus groups. You set the goals and the questions in the guide, and the moderator follows them. See how AI moderated research works for the steps.
Who runs moderators.io and how do I reach them?
